policy of the Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy. Queen Beatrix is the monarch of the country. The queen is independent of political parties. It is a political symbol, its powers are limited by a constitution. In fact, it is a political system similar to Canada with Queen Elizabeth II. Queen has a role in forming the government and the legislative process. It must keep the law to validate them. For municipal politics, it is the same system as in Canada. Until now, governments have been coalition, never a party had an absolute majority.
Currently, the Netherlands is governed by Prime Minister Jan Pieter Balkenende since July 22, 2002. His political party is the Christian Democratic Appeal. Each province is governed by a commissioner appointed by the Queen and the Queen by a legislative body. The provinces of the Netherlands does not have great power. Each has its own local parliament to ensure liaison with the state. Most power rests with the government of the country cental.
The States General of the Netherlands consist of two rooms. The second chamber is called Tweede Kamer der Staten Generaal.
